Floods are one of the most common and costly natural disasters in the United States. According to the National Flood Insurance Program, floods cause $8 billion in damages each year. And while you can't always control when or where a flood will strike, you can take steps to minimize the damage. Here are 10 of the worst things you can do if there's a flood:
  1. Driving a vehicle in a flooded area
Driving a vehicle in a flooded area is dangerous because the water might get into the vehicle’s internal parts.

  2. Using electricity in a flooded home
Turning off the power supply when it floods to prevent electric shock is best.

  3. Swimming or walking in the flood
The moving water can knock down and drown people.

  4. Handling wild animals in the flood
Handling wild animals such as rodents, snakes, and spiders from the water may cause harm because these animals are aggressive.

  5. Ignoring news and warnings
Warnings and news are there to help and remind people about the potential steps they will take during these hard times.

  6. No flood safety kits
Safety kits such as first aid are designed to save people from unfortunate situations such as disasters and hazards.

  7. Choosing not to evacuate
Some of the reasons people refuse to evacuate are because they want to protect and monitor their properties and belongings. But doing so will make life at risk from floods.

  8. Leaving utilities on
Water, electricity, gas, sewage, and sanitation should be closed and managed during the flooding because it may leave another disaster.

  9. Wearing inappropriate clothes
People should wear protective gear and thick clothes to protect themselves from injury, cold atmosphere, and chemical spill hazards.

  10. Leaving valuables on the lowest level
Leaving things and valuables from the lowest level of your home is not advisable unless people will store them in an air-tight, waterproof container.

What To Do During The Flooding/Warning?
  • Be Informed
  • Listen to or watch the news
  • Plan Ahead of Time
  • Know The Area
  • Have Your Emergency Kits
  • Follow Instructions
  • Cancel activities
  • Be alert and ready
  • Consider moving to the higher grounds
  • Unplug and turn off the utility systems
  • Elevate things to the highest level of the house
  • Clear the area and reduce the water flow
  • Avoid going to the flooding areas

3 Stages of Flood Watches and Warnings
  1. Possible flooding in the area.
  2. Flooding is about to occur. Stay away from low-level areas.
  3. Flash floods are about to occur. Seek a higher land area.

Conclusion
Flooding is a devastating situation caused by natural disasters or manufactured by accident. Doing irrelevant actions and being unprepared could lose many things, properties, and even worse, the lives of people you love. Floods can have a large impact on society.
