There have been 31 tropical depressions as of December 1, the official end of the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season; 30 were tropical storms. The National Hurricane Center had already gone through its alphabetical list of names by September and changed to Greek letters. Here are the effects of this year's hurricane season. Total Reported Damage
The effects of the Atlantic hurricane season were minimal through the first quarter of 2020, with less than $1 billion in total estimated damage by July 27. Later storms, however, were more damaging, starting with Hurricane Isaias, with current assessments coming in at nearly 6 billion and $10-12 billion for Hurricane Laura. Damage from Sally was estimated at $8-10 billion in total. CoreLogic, an analytics company, reports that Zeta's damage could reach $3.5 billion, mainly in Louisiana alone, which is around $1.7 billion to $2.8 billion. CoreLogic estimates that wind and storm surge insured losses from damage to Hurricane Delta will range from $700 million to $1.2 billion and an additional $800 million to $1.5 billion for offshore structures. Hurricane Eta's full economic analysis is not yet available, but the total will be upwards of $5.5 billion, with the majority taking place in Honduras. Iota's loss projections reached $564 million at the end of the season, and the overall gross damage is estimated to surpass $41 billion for the entire season. Unfortunately, over 400 individuals have lost their lives throughout the season. Result of Climate Change For Americans, storm seasons like this are positively associated with climate change. Hot water temperatures have also played a role in the season's hyperactivity due to human-induced, climate-driven warming. In some cases, warmer waters are instrumental in allowing a storm to organize and intensify quickly. Scientists believe that due in part to climate change, rapid intensification, which has long happened with the most extreme hurricanes, happens more often and in areas of the Atlantic basin where it has not been used to. Conclusion It is vital to take note of the damages hurricanes have on any property. It is also essential to be insured with the right coverage since climate change is still present in our world and will bring countless ruthless storms in the future.
