One of the most thrilling activities that motorcycle riders and owners do each year is to join group riding events. Motorcycle riders clubs and socials engage in group riding activities to promote their group, raise funds for charity, or round-up and meet. But unknown to most riders, there are some risks to group riding. The risks increase when the group you're riding with is composed of riders with different skill levels. With this in mind, a peaceful drive can turn into a stressful and unpredictable activity for you and all other people and drivers on the road. So, take note of the following when cruising with your group. Establish Ground Rules
Before the event, round up all the members to discuss the basics. Discuss the route you're taking, the pit stops, basic rider demeanor, and safety precautions. Ensure that all riders have their helmets, safety gear, and a first aid kit. Everyone should perform basic checks on their motorcycles to reduce any problems on the road. Discuss how your riding formation will be, who will lead the pack and who to alert for any issues. Make Sure Everyone Understands Hand Signals Even if you have two-way radios, your group must know and understand basic hand signals. During the briefing before the event, discuss basic hand signaling, including turning signals (right and left turn), stopping signals, speed up and slow down signals, signal, and double-file signals, and more. It would be best to test your members' skills and understanding of these signals before the event. Create A Riding Formation A riding formation is maintained at all times. You must be close to each other, and other motorists should be able to see you. But you must still keep space between you and other riders, so you don't look like you're tailgating. You must not be too close as you might swerve to the rider to your right or left. A staggering formation is the best formation on the road. In this formation, the leader rides to the left of the lane while the rider after him is at the right. Everyone follows alternately. Once you are already riding in formation, stay in your position. You may need to move to a single file if you’re riding a curved road or on uneven surfaces. Don’t Be In A Hurry Haste makes waste! Take your time and enjoy the wind, the sun, and the view. Consider stopping near scenic spots or anything that your group may find interesting. Take time to eat, hydrate, and go to the bathroom as you want to ride comfortably and in a pleasing way. Always Drive With Motorcycle Insurance Consult an insurance company that offers motorcycle insurance. Having this kind of insurance will make sure you are covered for any problems you may encounter on the road. Not all insurance companies offer motorcycle insurance so take time looking for the best provider.
